How To: Adjust Values in Demand Planning

Written by Judi Zietsman

Quick Summary: Editable values can be adjusted individually or across multiple selected cells in the Planning and Multi tables. The same general controls are used for historical demand, forecasts, and editable Reference Measures, while the selected measure determines how the change affects Final History, the Working Forecast, or supporting planning information.

Purpose

This article explains how to adjust individual or multiple values within editable measures in Demand Planning.

The same editing controls are used when working with:

  • Historical demand

  • Forecast values

  • Editable Reference Measures

  • Values displayed in the Multi table

The selected measure determines how the adjustment affects Final History, the Working Forecast, or supporting planning information.

Understanding how measures affect values

Before making a change, select the measure that reflects the reason for the adjustment.

Historical measures

  • Promotions: Positive values increase historical demand, while negative values reduce it.

  • Overrides: Replace historical demand with the entered value.

  • Editable Reference Measures: Store supporting planning information without directly changing forecast calculations.

Forecast measures

  • Forecast Promotions: Positive values increase demand, while negative values reduce it.

  • Forecast Adjustments: Positive values increase demand, while negative values reduce it.

  • Forecast Overrides: Replace the Working Forecast with the entered value.

Understanding editable cells

Editable cells contain a small arrow:

  • Gray arrow: No unsaved changes exist

  • Purple arrow: The cell contains an unsaved change

After the changes are saved, the arrow returns to gray.

Option 1: Adjust a single value

  1. Expand the applicable historical or forecast period where required.

  2. Locate the appropriate editable measure.

  3. Double-click the required cell so that the cursor appears.

  4. Enter the required value.

  5. Review the updated value in the applicable table. When working in the Planning view, also review the change in the graph.

  6. Select Save to commit the change.

A purple arrow appears in the edited cell until the change is saved.

Select Undo before saving to discard the pending change. Navigating away without saving also restores the previous value.

Option 2: Adjust multiple values

Step 1: Select multiple values

Multiple cells can be selected using any of the following methods:

  • Select the first cell and drag across the required range.

  • Select the first cell, hold Ctrl, and select the final cell in the range.

  • Select the name of an editable row to select the complete row.

Once multiple cells are selected:

  • The selected range is highlighted.

  • Summary statistics may appear above the table.

  • When working in the Planning view, the corresponding period is highlighted in the graph.

  • The applicable adjustment panel opens at the bottom of the screen.

  • The panel heading identifies the measure being adjusted.

The panel displayed depends on the selected measure:

  • Adjustment Panel: Used when adjusting historical measures

  • Forecast Adjustment panel: Used when adjusting forecast measures

The phrase applicable adjustment panel is used throughout this article when the instructions apply to both panels.

Step 2: Configure the adjustment

The Adjustment Panel and Forecast Adjustment panel provide the same core methods for updating selected cells:

  • Add to: Adds the specified value to every selected cell.

  • Subtract from: Subtracts the specified value from every selected cell.

  • Set to: Replaces every selected cell with the specified value.

  • Spread: Distributes a specified total evenly across the selected cells.

  • Percentage adjustment: Increases or decreases saved values by the specified percentage. Enter the percentage directly or use the slider.

  • Paste from a spreadsheet: Pastes values copied from an external spreadsheet directly into the selected editable cells.

  • Use another measure: Copies, adds, or subtracts values from another selected measure.

For Add to, Subtract from, Set to, Spread, or an adjustment based on another measure, select Adjust to update the selected cells.

The percentage control behaves differently. It immediately scales values that have already been saved in the table and does not require Adjust. The table and graph update as the percentage changes.

Changes made using Add to, Subtract from, Set to, Spread, Use another measure, or Paste from a spreadsheet remain unsaved until Save is selected.

The Adjustment Panel is displayed when historical measures are selected. The examples below show how its controls affect the highlighted cells in the Planning table.

Add to

Enter the value to add and select Adjust.

In this example, 10 is entered. A value of 10 is then added to each highlighted cell.

Subtract from

Enter the value to subtract and select Adjust.

In this example, 3 is entered. A value of 3 is then subtracted from each highlighted cell.

Set to

Enter the required value and select Adjust.

In this example, entering 70 replaces the existing value in every highlighted cell with 70.

Spread

Enter the total value to distribute and select Adjust.

In this example, 72 is spread evenly across three periods, resulting in a value of 24 in each period.

Percentage adjustment

Enter the required percentage or use the slider.

The percentage adjustment scales values that have already been saved. The selected values and corresponding graph update immediately as the percentage changes, and Adjust is not required.

Paste from a spreadsheet

Values can be copied from an external spreadsheet and pasted directly into an editable history row.

Use another measure

Select whether the source values should be copied, added, or subtracted. Then select the source measure from the drop-down list.

In this example, values from Imported History are copied into the highlighted cells.

The Forecast Adjustment panel is displayed when forecast measures are selected.

The selected values and corresponding graph update immediately as the percentage changes. Adjust is not required.

Paste from a spreadsheet

Values can be copied from an external spreadsheet and pasted directly into an editable forecast row.

Use another measure

Select whether the source values should be copied, added, or subtracted. Then select the source measure from the drop-down list.

In this example, values from the Computer Forecast are copied into the highlighted cells.

Step 3: Manage and save the changes

Use the controls in the applicable adjustment panel to manage the changes:

  • Adjust: Updates the selected cells using the configured Add to, Subtract from, Set to, Spread, or another-measure adjustment.

  • Clear: Removes the value entered in the applicable adjustment panel.

  • Undo: Discards unsaved changes and restores the previous values.

  • Save: Commits the changes to the selected measure.

The result of saving depends on the selected measure:

  • Changes to historical measures are included when Final History is calculated.

  • Changes to forecast measures update the Working Forecast.

  • Changes to editable Reference Measures are committed to the selected Reference Measure.

Adjusting values in the Multi table

Values displayed in the Multi table can be adjusted individually or across multiple selected cells using the same general editing controls.

The selected measure determines how the change affects historical demand, the Working Forecast, or a Reference Measure.

Changes can be reviewed across members at the next hierarchy level before Save is selected.

⚠️ Watchouts

  • Select the appropriate measure: Promotions and Forecast Adjustments increase or reduce existing values, while Overrides replace them. The selected measure determines whether the change affects Final History, the Working Forecast, or supporting planning information.

  • Save before navigating away: Unsaved changes are discarded when the planning context changes.

  • Percentage adjustments behave differently: They scale values that have already been saved and do not require Adjust. Review the updated table and graph carefully before continuing.

  • Forecast Overrides may require a refresh: In some cases, a saved Forecast Override may be recorded correctly while the Working Forecast temporarily displays the Computer Forecast value. Refresh the browser to display the saved Override.

💡 Tips

  • Review the graph before saving: The graph provides a visual indication of how an adjustment changes the demand pattern.

  • Select the complete row for broader changes: Selecting the row name highlights all available periods in that editable row.

  • Use another measure as a starting point: Existing values can be copied into an editable measure before further adjustments are made.
